The circular economy has arrived in Swiss politics

The circular economy has arrived in Swiss politics

The Swiss sustainability strategy aims at a 50% reduction in C02 emissions by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. For the construction and real estate sector, which is responsible for 84% of the waste generated in Switzerland as well as for a large share of the CO2 emissions, this is both a challenge and an opportunity.

Politicians demand that the industry increases its reuse of materials, amongst other things. ‘Strengthening the Swiss Circular Economy’ is a parliamentary initiative that proposes concrete amendments to the Environmental Protection Act to make consumption more ecological, close material cycles and, thereby, significantly reduce environmental pollution. In addition, the revised law on public procurement (BöB) makes it possible to compete on sustainability rather than just on price.

To promote the reuse of materials and products, material passports are also being discussed. In response to a question to the federal government from Adèle Thorens Goumaz, a member of the Council of States, the Federal Government points out that it supports the development of a material register in real estate and has been backing Madaster since it first started. In the coming month of September, a parliamentary group on Circular Economy will be established to raise awareness and promote parliamentary initiatives on this matter.
