State-of-the-Art Sustainable Development: Die Macherei Berlin Kreuzberg
A prime example of sustainable urban development is taking shape in Kreuzberg: Die Macherei Berlin Kreuzberg. This innovative mixed-use complex seamlessly integrates eco-friendly renovations with high-efficiency new builds, fostering both connectivity between the Kreuzberg and Mitte districts and a thriving community.
A Vision for the Future of Work and Urban Living
Die Macherei is more than just office space—it’s a forward-thinking urban quarter. The development offers flexible workspaces, co-working areas, dining, retail, fitness, hotels, and event spaces. At its core is the M50, a 90-metre former post office tower, meticulously renovated to minimise resource consumption. By Q4/2024, it will provide 27,000 m² of office space, including a ground-floor pitching studio and a rooftop terrace with panoramic city views.
Next to it, M60 sets a new benchmark as Germany’s first carbon-neutral office building of its scale. Advanced photovoltaic technology and a CO₂-neutral biogas cogeneration plant ensure full energy efficiency. The flexible 7,500 m² workspace can be adapted to tenants’ needs, while green terraces provide ideal spaces for relaxation.
The third building, M40, is a striking timber-hybrid construction, designed to integrate sustainability into its very fabric. With 25,500 m² across eight floors, it features optimised lighting, indoor climate control, landscaped terraces, and a central courtyard. The entire complex is car-free, prioritising bike-friendly infrastructure with charging stations.
Cutting-Edge Smart Building Technology
Each building incorporates sensor-controlled heating and cooling systems, while smart building technologies enhance energy efficiency. Despite unique architectural designs by Sauerbruch Hutton, Eike Becker Architekten, ROBERTNEUN, and KEC Architekten, the project achieves a harmonious balance between renovation and new construction while advancing circular economy principles.
