Juf Nienke: the most sustainable building in Amsterdam

Case studies 2 aug 2023
Juf Nienke is an extraordinary building intended as a residential environment for people from education, health care and the police force.
The new entrance building of Centrumeiland in Amsterdam, designed by RAU and SeARCH for Dokvast, offers 61 timber rental dwellings and promises to be the most sustainable residential building in Amsterdam. The building is constructed with a smart circuit of prefabricated CLT units, and the materials used in its construction include reused and recycled materials such as timber with a low environmental impact and fully renewable materials. There is very little chance of these materials and products ever being lost, as they are all registered in Madaster. As a striking eye-catcher, the building’s roof has been fitted with a bat hotel with mating and winter quarters. The fully circular and modular building was recently selected, from the entries by more than 90 countries, as the 2023 Architizer A+Awards Jury Winner in the Unbuilt Sustainable Residential Project category.
