From architecture studies to a mission in sustainability

Blogs 16 dec 2024

Hi! My name is Luuk van Velzen, and as of November 1st, I’ve joined Madaster as a Customer Success representative. I’m 25 years old, born and raised in IJmuiden, and this past June, I graduated with a degree in Built Environment, specializing in Architectural Technology at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. During my studies, I discovered a passion for sustainability, which has become an increasingly important part of my career path.

Choosing architectural technology

My journey began with the ambition to become an architect. However, as I progressed in my studies, I started to question whether that path was truly the right fit. So, I chose to specialize in Architectural Technology—a decision that allowed me to stay connected to architecture while also exploring other aspects of the field. During my studies, my interest in sustainability and circular construction grew. While an internship with a construction company with circular ambitions might have seemed like the obvious choice, I opted for an internship at an architecture firm. I wanted to experience firsthand what it would be like to work as an architect. At Moke Architecten, I learned a great deal about the profession and, perhaps even more importantly, about myself. This experience confirmed that the path of architecture was not ultimately where I saw myself.

A shift towards sustainability

In the final years of my studies, my interest in sustainability intensified, particularly as I began to understand the enormous sustainability challenges facing the Netherlands. This awareness inspired me to make a meaningful contribution to a more sustainable construction sector with my final project. The urgency only increased after attending a lecture on the scale of construction waste in the Netherlands. Together with a fellow student, I decided to address this issue in our graduation project.

For our project, we were assigned an empty office building in Amsterdam, which we would transform into student housing using as many reclaimed materials as possible. Our goal was to demonstrate the benefits of reuse, and this quickly led us to Madaster. Through two material passports—one based on reclaimed materials and the other on quick, low-cost solutions—we used Madaster’s software to showcase the positive impact of using reclaimed materials.

A new start at Madaster

Throughout my graduation project, I had regular contact with Madaster, and the connection always felt positive. After graduation, I received a message about an open position with them. Although I hadn’t initially considered Madaster as an employer, I decided to explore the opportunity. The conversation felt right from the start, and after a second interview, my decision was clear: I wanted to join Madaster. Fortunately, the feeling was mutual, and I was able to start quickly.

My role and future at Madaster

At Madaster, I’ll be working as a Customer Success representative, a role where I can bring together my passion for sustainability and my technical background to support clients. In this role, I’ll contribute to sustainability efforts in the Netherlands and aim to share my enthusiasm with both current and new clients. I’m looking forward to guiding them in using the platform, helping Madaster grow and evolve.

This is my first job, and I’m excited to make a real difference with a fresh perspective and a lot of energy. I believe strongly in Madaster’s vision and am convinced that Madaster is an essential part of the solution.

I look forward to working alongside my colleagues and clients to take meaningful steps toward a sustainable future!
